It was the late 1970s and I didn’t know a stock from a bond when I started at Crown Life Insurance in the investment administration group. I took the requisite courses, the CSC, options. I left in 1980 to join Canada’s largest investment brokerage just about the time of Trudeau’s (the father) National Energy Program, skyrocketing interest rates, a brutal bear and a tough man’s business. But I survived and thrived. I took more courses, studied for and obtained the CFA designation, climbed the management ladder, worked in many different areas of the firm, got promotions, and was lucky to learn from some of the smartest people in the business. I got married, moved to Calgary, had a daughter, moved back to Toronto, had a son, worked hard, lived through crashes and booms, changed firms. Even changed careers to be a business TV personality. And all the time, I learned and shared. I’d like to continue to do so.
